Description / Petromax FT1 0.93L Cast Iron Dutch Oven
When a power cut or time away from the kitchen makes normal cooking difficult, a Dutch oven gives you another way to prepare a meal. The Petromax FT1 is a 0.93L cast-iron pot for cooking and baking outdoors over an open fire, charcoal or briquettes, as well as in an oven at home.
Its seasoned finish means it is ready to use without first seasoning it. Cast iron stores and distributes warmth, while the raised edge on the lid lets you place embers or charcoal on top to heat the pot from all sides. A sturdy handle helps with lifting, and the thermometer hole lets you check the temperature without removing the lid. The lid has no legs and cannot be used as a separate pan.
Where it fits in your kit
- Home emergency box: an option for cooking when your usual kitchen setup is unavailable.
- Camp cooking: prepare sauces, stews and other dishes over an open fire or charcoal.
- Off-grid cooking: use with charcoal or briquettes when cooking away from mains-powered appliances.
- Outdoor baking: use embers or charcoal on the raised lid to heat from above as well as below.
Prep tips
- Practise cooking with it at home or at camp before relying on it during a disruption.
- Plan a safe, suitable place to use an open fire or charcoal, and follow local fire rules.
- Keep a separate way to lift the hot lid to hand; the source identifies a Petromax Lid Lifter as an accessory.
- Check and maintain cast iron before storing it, following suitable care guidance.
