When you’re cooking outdoors or planning for days off-grid, being able to make charcoal from wood gives you another option for the fire. The Petromax Charcoal Maker is a stainless steel canister that uses low-oxygen combustion to turn wood into charcoal for grilling.
Fill the canister with your chosen wood; birch and beech work particularly well. Place it in the fire and watch the smoke: the change from yellow to white signals that the charcoal is ready. The resulting hardwood charcoal has a long burning time and low smoke, and can be used for grilling on a barbecue or Petromax Atago.
