Description / Petromax BK1 Stainless Steel Hobo Stove for Off-Grid Cooking
When a power cut or a day off-grid leaves you without your usual cooker, the Petromax BK1 is a compact stainless steel hobo stove for preparing a hot meal. Its push-together assembly and choice of fuels make it a useful cooking backup for a home emergency box or camp kit.
The stove’s design creates a stack effect to burn branches and twigs. With the grate in its lower position, use brushwood, branches or small twigs through the large opening; in the upper position, it works with a dry fuel tablet or a spirit burner. It assembles in a few steps, and the parts pack flat into the ripstop transport pouch. It is designed to support pots of every size and weight.
Where it fits in your kit
- Home emergency box — a backup way to cook when the usual cooker is unavailable.
- Grab bag — its flat-packed form and 590 g weight with pouch suit a portable kit.
- Camp and bushcraft kit — use suitable branches and twigs as fuel.
- Off-grid cooking — use a dry fuel tablet or spirit burner with the grate in its upper position.
Prep tips
- Practise assembling the stove before relying on it away from home.
- Keep a separate fire-lighting method with your stove and fuel.
- Plan for more than one suitable fuel option, and check what is available where you intend to cook.
- Store the stove and pouch together so the parts are ready to find and assemble.
