BeaverCraft AX1 Compact Wood Hatchet

When a storm leaves branches down or you need to prepare firewood at camp, a compact hatchet can handle useful wood-processing jobs without taking up the space of a full-size axe. The BeaverCraft AX1 is a hand-forged wood hatchet for chopping branches, splitting twigs and logs, and general workshop or woodland work.

It has a hardened carbon steel blade and a strong ash wood handle waxed and coated with linseed oil. The cowhide leather sheath helps guard the edge during storage and has a belt loop. Use the hatchet on suitable wood and work from a stable position.

Where it fits in your kit

• Home emergency box: A useful wood-processing tool if you keep a supply of firewood.
• Shed or woodstore: For garden, farm and workshop jobs involving branches and logs.
• Camp: Prepare firewood and split smaller pieces for an open fire.
• Bushcraft and woodland work: A compact option for practical carpentry and green woodworking tasks.

Prep tips

• Store the hatchet in its sheath in a dry place, and check the edge and handle periodically.
• Practise controlled chopping on a stable surface before relying on the tool for a job.
• Keep a separate fire-lighting method and suitable firewood with your camp equipment.
